Summary This vacancy is for an Intergovernmental Affairs Specialist (Tribal) position in the Associate Director for Communications located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. The Census Bureau is accessible from the Metro Rail Green Line - Suitland Station. . Responsibilities Supports the establishment and maintenance of effective working relationships between the Census and state, local, and tribal governments, their associations, Congress/staff; and to advocate for its stated goals and objectives. Performs tasks to enable the Intergovernmental Affairs Office (IOA) to develop/maintain liaison networks with stakeholders, advising the Director/staff matters with categories of American Indian Tribal Nations, and Hawaiian Homeland stakeholders. Works closely with the Tribal Affairs Coordinator (TAC), IAO Branch Chief, and the Intergovernmental Liaison to ensure the goals and tasks of the IAO are achieved. Specialized Experience: For the GS-12, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes: Developing and maintaining liaison networks with intergovernmental stakeholders; advising internal and external stakeholders on intergovernmental matters; assisting in the preparation of staff for participation in hearings, briefings and presentation before congress, state and local government officials, and their intergovernmental associations regarding tribal matters; developing and implementing projects designed to increase the awareness of tribal leaders and other intergovernmental officials; experience advocating for the priorities of an agency or organization; experience managing issues raised by government officials or other principals. Education: No substitute for experience at this grade level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer. Education Additional Information If hired for this position with the Census Bureau, at its headquarters office located in Suitland, Maryland, you will be expected to temporarily telework to maximum extent while the headquarters building is being renovated. Once renovations are completed for your area, you will be notified when to return to the office. At that time, you will be expected to work from your duty station, and you may be eligible to telework, up to 8 days a pay period depending on your respective work schedule, with approval from your supervisor.
