  • This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

  • New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

One position will be filled at either the Engineer-In-Training I or II level, depending upon candidate qualifications.

Salary Ranges:

Engineer-In-Training I - $65,700 - $72,252 Annually

Engineer-In-Training II - $68,988 - $75,876 Annually

Description of Job

About the Unit:

This position is located in CDOT’s Region 4 Sterling Engineering Residency. This residency provides project design, construction and materials support to Sterling and the surrounding areas. It ensures that projects which improve and maintain the transportation system within the Region are designed and constructed in a safe and cost effective manner, including materials utilized in the projects.

About the Position:

Under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, the Engineer-In-Training I or II applies and implements engineering theories, principles, and standards and will learn to oversee, direct, and review the work and documentation done by consultants on projects. This position will learn to oversee both design and construction elements of projects. This position will gain experience in inspection of project work, documentation of pay quantities, surveying on various construction projects, as well as training in the design aspects of projects.

Your major duties and responsibilities will include some or all of the following, depending on the level, Engineer-In-Training I or II.

Under the guidance and supervision of a Professional Engineer performs the following:

  • Learns to assist with management of construction projects through design and construction by interpreting and applying CDOT design standards.

  • During design, learns to assist with initiating and scoping projects, creating plans and specifications, estimates costs, and preparing projects for bid.

  • Learns to direct and monitor the work of consultants performing design and construction engineering functions.

  • Throughout the project, learns to maintain records of the work, monitor budgets and schedules, monitor quality, and process payments to consultants and contractors.

  • Learns to apply the plans, specifications, M & S Standards, and project notes in the inspection of the work progress by contractors to assure conformance specifications by assisting in supervising, performing detailed inspections, and maintaining proper documentation, including inspecting the contractor’s materials and work.

  • Learns to prepare a complete and accurate account of pay quantities, project activities, correspondence, conditions, and problem resolutions by completing various written and computer-generated reports.

  • Learns to evaluate contractor materials to determine the acceptability to be incorporated or used in the constructed project.

  • Learns to compile and tabulate delivery tickets, as well as verify yield requirements.

  • Obtains dimensions of placed, constructed, and/or installed items and calculates required areas, volumes, etc.

  • Learns to evaluate contractor materials to determine the acceptability to be incorporated or used in the constructed project.

  • Learns the skills necessary to successfully supervise others both internal to CDOT as well as consultants, testers, and inspectors during their assignments.

  • Assists project managers as they direct the work of consultants providing design and construction engineering services

  • Develops Task Orders and monitor work as it progresses to ensure compliance with Department procedures, design standards, and work processes.

  • Assists the project engineer in the final checking of plan sheets, project specifications, project correspondence, and payments both during design and construction phases of the project.

  • Assures accuracy and compliance with established standards and policies on all plans by consultants and the design unit.

  • Trains to utilize computers and design software packages (such as Trns-Port, MicroStation, SiteManager, Word and Excel), and set up project information, background and funding in Trns-Port system, document pay items according to the percentage completed by prime and sub-contractors.

  • On active construction projects, learns to act as project tester of materials incorporated into the project, assuring that all requirements of CDOT Field Material Manual are met. Materials include soils, HMA, Concrete and other associated items.

  • Certifications to be obtained include CAPA, ACI, WAQTC, Radiological Nuclear Safety, LIMS and Sitemanager.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • Your schedule will be primarily Monday – Friday with opportunity for a flexible schedule.

  • After a training period, you may work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work.

  • Travel necessary for project related activities, site visits, meetings, trainings and committee attendance.

  • Required to work outside in all weather conditions, in close proximity to moving traffic, and over variable terrain.

Minimum Qualifications

Engineer-In-Training I

Must have a bachelors’ degree in engineering from a U.S. accredited institution by the date of hire (accepting May 2024 graduates).

Substitution

Current enrollment as an Engineer-Intern by theColoradoState Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors will substitute for the degree. You must provide your EI number on your application.

Engineer-In-Training II

Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by theColoradoState Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors. You must provide your EI number on your application.

Substitution

Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors will substitute for the enrollment as an Engineer Intern. You must upload a copy of your PE license into your online application as verification of your registration as a Professional Engineer.

Unless substituting current Colorado registration as an Engineer-Intern or a Colorado PE license or applying at the EIT II level only, a legible copy of your unofficial college transcript(s) or credential evaluation report that shows degree(s) conferred, your name and the name of the school must be submitted with your application. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service. Failure to provide a transcript or credential evaluation report may result in your application being rejected.

Conditions of Employment

  • If you are selected at the EIT I level, you must provide a copy of your transcript showing that an engineering degree has been conferred by the date of hire as a condition of employment.

  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training I must obtain enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors within three years of the initial appointment to the EIT I classification.

  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training must obtain registration as a Professional Engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors within eight years of the initial appointment to the EIT classification.

  • Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks. More information in the supplemental information section.

  • A current valid driver's license is required for this position as it requires operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
