University of Rochester Lab Tech III, Ctr Vaccine Biology and Immunology in Rochester, New York

Responsibilities

Position Summary :

The technician will provide research to support the goals of a viral immunology laboratory aimed at understanding the adaptive and innate immune response to influenza infection and vaccination. As part of this position, the technician will participate in planning, performing, and interpreting experiments aimed at understanding the CD4 T cell response and early innate response to influenza virus and work with the Principal Investigator. This work will involve the planning and execution of experiments involving the use of mouse models as well as direct studies utilizing human PBMCs and sera. Techniques frequently utilized include infection of mice, Elispot assays, ELISAs, molecular cloning, cell purification.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and perform experiments to quantify the B and CD4 T cell responses infection with influenza. This will involve purification of CD4 T cells, followed by cytokine Elispot assays to quantify responses to individual peptide epitopes, peptide pools, or whole antigens. These experiments will be done using cells obtained from mice.

  • Set up and conduct experiments investigating the immunology of influenza using mouse models. This will involve infection or vaccination of mice, followed by isolation of spleen, lymph nodes, lungs or lung cells, and other tissues for analysis.

  • Plan and perform other laboratory assays, including PCR, western blots, ELISAs, and multi-parameter analytical flow cytometry.

  • Collect, record, and analyze results from research experiments and organize and prepare results for presentation at laboratory meetings; maintain detailed experimental records and present information to PI and others.

  • Attend weekly lab meetings and relevant seminars, including regular meetings with the PI to review data, propose experiments and discuss analyzes.

  • Assist in the management of the laboratory's reagent inventory, including reagents necessary for day to day laboratory operations; keep research supplies stocked.

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Associate or BS/BA degree in biochemistry, biology, microbiology or chemistry with some research experience in a related field preferred. Prefer an individual with an interest or coursework in Immunology preferred.

  • 2 years of experience performing basic sampling, monitoring or research activities; compiling and collecting data and preparing reports.

  • or equivalent combination of education and experience required

  • Ability to work with rodents.

  • Ability to adjust research priorities as needed and be willing to present, discuss, and troubleshoot data with the PI and co-workers.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Must be detailed, accurate and highly organized with the ability to work independently with minimal direction.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $16.49 - $23.08 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
