Position Summary:

The McArt lab at Cornell University seeks a highly qualified applicant to assist in research on honey bee biology and applied beekeeping. Our lab focuses on three broad areas: (1) pollinator health, including applied research to benefit the beekeeping community, (2) ecotoxicology, and (3) disease ecology of pollinator communities. Each of these approaches require skills in bee biology, pollinator health, and applied beekeeping. We seek a talented, motivated candidate with the skills and motivation to maintain our research apiary and conduct field and laboratory research with honey bees.


Objectives:


1. Maintain a healthy research apiary of 40-60 honey bee colonies that can be used for field and laboratory experiments

a. Monitor, assess, and manage colonies according to modern beekeeping techniques.

b. Coordinate colony management with extension activities, such as beekeeping workshops and the Cornell Master Beekeeper Program.


2. Assist with applied beekeeping, ecotoxicology, and disease ecology research

a. Contribute to research and acquire materials and supplies for field and laboratory experiments using honey bees.

b. Summarize data and contribute to research and extension publications regarding honey bee biology and applied beekeeping.


This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of extension, dependent on funding.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color.
  • Experience working with diversity, equity, inclusion, and wellbeing programs.

  • Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Undergraduate degree in biology, entomology, environmental science, or related fields.
  • At least four years of beekeeping experience.
  • At least one year of experience managing a research apiary.
  • Expertise and interest in honey bee biology, ecotoxicology, and applied beekeeping research.
  • Experience working directly with beekeepers to assess issues in their operations.
  • Experience or interest in grafting and rearing honey bee queens.
  • Ability to develop, learn, and troubleshoot new software and laboratory and field protocols related to automatic monitoring of honey bee behavior, in vitro rearing of honey bees, field cage experiments using multiple species of bees, and on-farm assessments of honey bee health.
  • Experience in statistical analysis using R.
  • Must be comfortable mentoring undergraduate students in laboratory and field techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least six years of beekeeping experience.
  • At least two years of experience managing a research apiary.
  • At least two years of experience contributing to honey bee biology, ecotoxicology, and applied beekeeping research.
